Quality inspection in progress

About Somerset's Top Attractions

We exist to celebrate and champion the very best visitor attractions Somerset has to offer — and to give families the confidence to plan a brilliant day out.

Our mission

Somerset is home to an extraordinary range of visitor attractions — from ancient caves and steam railways to world-class gardens and fascinating museums. But with so much choice, how do families know which attractions will truly deliver?

That's where SATA comes in. The Somerset Association of Tourist Attractions was founded to set and uphold a genuine quality standard for the county's visitor economy. Every attraction that carries our quality mark has been independently assessed against a rigorous set of criteria — and continues to be reviewed regularly.

We're not a booking platform or a review aggregator. We're a membership body run by and for Somerset's attraction operators, with a shared commitment to excellence.

What the quality mark means

When you see the Somerset's Top Attractions badge at an attraction or on our website, it means that attraction has passed our independent inspection process. Here's what we assess:

Venue & Facilities

We assess the physical environment — car parking, accessibility, toilets, signage, cleanliness, and the overall condition of the site. A great day out starts before you've even bought your ticket.

Content & Experience

The heart of any attraction is what it offers. We look at the quality, depth, and presentation of the core experience — whether that's a cave tour, a steam train journey, a garden, or a museum collection.

Customer Service

We assess how staff engage with visitors — from the welcome at the gate to how queries and complaints are handled. Warm, knowledgeable, and helpful service makes all the difference.

Catering & Retail

Where applicable, we review the quality and value of on-site catering and retail. A good café or well-stocked shop adds real value to a day out — and we expect quality here too.

Value for Money

We consider whether the overall experience justifies the admission price. Quality doesn't have to mean expensive — but visitors should always feel they've had their money's worth.

The inspection process

Our inspections are carried out by trained, independent assessors who visit attractions as members of the public — unannounced, so what they see is what every visitor sees.

  1. Mystery visit

Our assessor visits the attraction anonymously, experiencing it exactly as a paying visitor would. They assess every aspect of the visit against our quality criteria.

  2. Detailed report

Following the visit, the assessor produces a detailed written report covering each criterion, with specific observations and evidence.

  3. Feedback & discussion

The report is shared with the attraction operator, who has the opportunity to respond, clarify, and discuss any findings before a final decision is made.

  4. Quality mark awarded

Attractions that meet our standards are awarded the SATA quality mark and listed in our directory. Those that don't are given clear guidance on how to improve.

  5. Annual review

The quality mark is not a one-off award. Members are re-assessed regularly to ensure standards are maintained — and we work with members to help them continuously improve.
